Meerkat Music is an open-source Android music player built around simplicity and a straightforward user experience. What began as a technical experiment with Google's Media3 evolved into a project focused on creating a simple music player and developing reusable tools for media control.

Music, Without Unnecessary Complexity
A good music player does not always need dozens of complicated features. Sometimes, it simply needs to present music clearly and make listening feel natural.
Meerkat Music is an open-source Android project built around that idea: a straightforward music player with a clear interface and a focus on browsing songs and albums.
A Simpler Listening Experience
The goal is to help users navigate their music collection, find the tracks they want, and interact with the app without unnecessary complexity getting in the way.
More Than a Music Player
The project also has a technical story. It began as an experiment with Google’s Media3 and gradually inspired the idea of building a separate, reusable library for media control.
Development of this library is ongoing, with the aim of making media-related functionality easier to organize and reuse across Android applications.
Open Source by Design
The source code is available on GitHub, allowing developers and other interested users to explore the implementation, follow the project, and learn from its development.
Technology Stack
- Java: Core application implementation
- Android XML: User interface structure
- Media3: The starting point for the project’s media playback exploration
- Room: Data persistence
- RxJava: Reactive programming
- Hilt: Dependency injection
The repository provides the source code for examining the implementation details of these technologies.
Project Status
Meerkat Music is an ongoing project. Alongside the player itself, work continues on the idea of a dedicated media-control library.
The goal is simple: build a useful music-listening experience while exploring better ways to develop reusable Android software components.
The story behind the app
Meerkat Music started with a simple goal: learning and experimenting with Google's Media3. While working with media streaming, I encountered challenges that made me think more deeply about how media playback and control should be handled.
Rather than keeping it as a learning exercise, I decided to build a simple Android music player—an app that lets people browse their music and listen without unnecessary complexity.
But the idea did not stop there. As development progressed, I began exploring whether media control could be separated from the player itself and developed as an independent library that could be reused in other projects.
Alongside Meerkat Music, I am working on a dedicated media-control library. This part of the work is still in progress, with the goal of creating a more structured and reusable approach to handling media functionality in Android applications.
For me, Meerkat Music is more than a music player. It is a project that grew out of a real technical challenge and became an opportunity to build a useful product while exploring reusable software components.
